Emerald Destiny: Perspective of a first time River Cruiser

Written by Carolyn Neveu, Travel Consultant I was fortunate enough to experience the Danube Explorer itinerary, aboard the newly inaugurated Emerald Destiny recently travelling from Passau to Budapest. While I have travelled aboard cruise lines in the Caribbean, this was my first experience on a river cruise. I would like to share my experience with you. While the cities and towns visited were absolutely stunning, this post is to note what a river cruise experience is like, and to compare with a larger cruise line operation. These are of course my personal observations on the similarities and differences. I am sure there are more, but this is what stands out to me. In preparation for the cruise, we were sent a day by day itinerary showing us what the INCLUDED excursion was for each day we were in the various cities/towns. These were generally city walking tours with a local guide. One thing about Europeans, they absolutely love their history and are proud to tell you about it. I was amazed at the wealth of information each and every one has. In addition to the included excursions, optional ones were available as well. These were at a cost, but I would consider them reasonable for what you are getting. In comparison, on an ocean cruise – excursions are always extra, and are NOT included. More to follow on this in my second post. The documentation for the cruise includes a detailed itinerary, a map of the route, luggage tags (NOT paper, but actual tags), and a document portfolio. It zippers closed, which keeps all the necessary paperwork together and harder to lose. It has five separate pockets. It is a keepsake that can be [...]

CWT Stewart Travel’s Top 10 things to see and do in NYC!

Here at Carlson Wagonlit Travel/Stewart Tours we are passionate about travel! We eat, sleep, and breathe travel and will talk about it with anyone who will listen. While we all love travel, normally our favourite destinations and places to stay are as individual as we are. There is only one place we all agree on.......a place where we think everyone should visit at least once in their lives……New York City! We asked our agents to share with us their top picks for places to see and things to do when visiting the Big Apple. From their responses we have compiled this handy dandy list for your perusal. 1. Metropolitan Museum of Art – a.k.a. The Met  The Met presents over 5,000 years of art spanning all cultures and time periods. The Met is huge but you will never see a collection like this anywhere else. Since the Museum opened its doors to the public in its current location in Central Park in 1880, its footprint has expanded to cover more than two million square feet. Because of its size you will need to plan your visit. Thankfully the Met has some great maps and tools on their website to help. 2. Times Square Times Square is one of the most popular commercial intersections in the world! More than a third of a million people pass through iconic Times Square NYC every day. It is know for its neon signs & giant billboards, along with Broadway Shows, great food, and entertainment. This is also where the New Years Eve ball drops every year (and most recently where Mariah Carey gave her ‘memorable’ New Year’s Eve performance). Times Square has been featured so much in television and [...]

When is the best time to go to Disney? Our expert Myenna can help!

This is a common question that as a Disney Vacation Planner I find myself being asked often. The answer? It all depends. What do you want to see? What is most important to you and your family on this trip? Is this trip for a special celebration? Do you mind if the children miss school, does your school have restrictions aboutwhen and for how long a child can be out of school? Is Disney right for my family? These are important things to consider that may help determine what time is best for your family to visit the mouse. Let’s dig a little deeper into these topics to best help you decide when the best time is for you and your family to visit Walt Disney World. What do you want to see? Are you going to Disney to see something specific? Disney has an abundance of special events that take place throughout the year. Some require special entrance tickets, but in my experience have been well worth it! This years special events include: Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend – early January, Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival – March to May, Atlanta Braves Spring Training, Disney Early Morning Magic Fantasyland, Awaken Summer, Sounds Like Summer – June to July, Night of Joy – September 9-10, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party – select nights September and October, Epcot International Food and Wine Festival – September to November, Festival of the Masters, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – select nights November and December, and Holidays Around the World. You will be sure to have a magical time no matter when you go, but if there is something special that you really want to see plan your days around the [...]

Here’s what our travel experts had to say. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sandals Royal Plantation Resort - Ocho Rios, Jamaica I have visited this resort several times, the most recent was about 3 yrs ago. I love how intimate & lush the resort is. Boutique & small yet it offers all the amenities of a larger resort. Romance oozes out of every inch of this resort form morning to night. Peacocks roam the grounds and the lush vegetation makes for fantastic pictures. Swim out rooms & sumptuous accommodations really made me swoon... I love that the rooms are all butler suites & all ocean view – offering stunning sunset views from each room. The food was prepared and presented beautifully & each wait staff were very attentive & service was exceptional! Every staff member I saw was happy to help & greeted you with a warm & welcoming Jamaica smile. If I were able to recommend a resort for romance – I would have to say Sandals Royal Plantation! CWT Stewart Travel flies to N’awlins (New Orleans)!

One of the first things you notice when you arrive in New Orleans is how friendly everyone is.  From the cab drivers to the hotel staff I worked with, I couldn’t get over just how nice they were. My first evening there I sailed down the Mississippi River on the Steamboat Natchez.  I had phenomenal weather that night to enjoy the music and a drink on the deck while looking at the views of the New Orleans shoreline.  Even if you are not a fan of Jazz music, the band was amazing and the atmosphere was great. The next morning (before my group arrived) I was up early to take in some sites on my own.  I enjoyed walking by the river that I had sailed down the night before.  It had a great path with benches and the streetcar runs by the river and is the oldest operating streetcar in the world.  I took the opportunity several nights later to ride it just for the experience. After walking along the river I made my way to Jackson Square where you find St Louis Cathedral and all the artists are out displaying their artwork.  There are some of the oldest buildings that are now retail shops, museums, galleries and restaurants on the main levels.  I stopped at world famous Cafe Du Monde for a beignet!  Absolutely delicious and a must do. A little further is the French Market that is full of restaurants, shops, and in the evening some great music as well. Walking around first thing in the morning it was quiet, but it doesn’t take long at all to fill up with tourists everywhere. Bourbon St also just a few blocks from our hotel [...]

The Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas Pre-inaugural Sailing

The Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas Pre-inaugural Sailing Our very own Lynda Sorrie and Myenna Doering were a few of the lucky agents who got to experience the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas Pre-inaugural Sailing first hand. The Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas is classed as the world’s most revolutionary ship. You can skydive right on the deck of the ship with a skydiving simulator, play with the bumper cars, a roller rink, circus school and more. If relaxing is more your speed, enjoy breathtaking island sights from the best seat in house, the North Star. Take in transformative entertainment at Two70. Or grab a drink at Bionic Bar, where mixology meets technology. “The Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas is truly a beautiful ship with elegant and modern décor, wonderful food, excellent entertainment and a variety of on board activities. It was truly a wonderful experience” said Lynda who has sailed on over 20 high–end ships. Lynda and Myenna also were amazed by the 360 degree view from the North Star - a jewel-shaped capsule gently ascended over 300 feet above sea level.  “No matter where you stand in the North Starr you have a great view and can see for miles”, said Myenna. The ladies enjoyed the wall to wall and floor to ceiling windows which provided incredible views, and the ship has a retractable roof!  How cool is that?! The Solarium for adults only is incredibly inviting and relaxing. The Solarium is located at the bow of the ship, the pools and big screen were located in the middle and the rock wall, Flo Rider surf simulator, and Rip Cord by IFly were located at the stern of the ship. Looking to try a different sun destination? Panama might be just the place!

If you have visited islands of the Caribbean, and want to try something a little different – Panama may be what you are after! As a Central American country, and bordering the equator, you are guaranteed hot weather. Rainy season is through the summer months, but in our Canadian winter; the weather is just perfect! There is always a breeze over the Pacific. It is also a GREAT time to go to as the Panama Canal is celebrating its 100th year in 2014! I just got back from a week at The Royal Decameron with my husband and daughters. The Royal Decameron Golf Beach Resort and Villas Panama is a great family friendly, 4 star resort offering the Pacific Ocean golden sand beach and numerous pools to lounge by. The property is located close to the rainforest which offers a unique vacation experience. There are numerous 3 storey buildings scattered throughout the property; either in the hotel section, ocean view rooms, beachfront rooms or in the golf section (across the street from the main resort). An air conditioned bus takes you from the airport to the resort itself. It is a two hour bus ride, but through the city of Panama and the countryside. In 2014, an international airport is expected to be opened beside the Royal Decameron thereby eliminating the bus transfer. I highly recommend the Beachfront rooms. They are conveniently located near the main pools and the a la carte restaurant options. This is an expansive property, with lots of walking trails and a long beach for walking. I do not recommend this property to anyone with mobility issues. There are stairs to the main areas, and to the casino area. Not 10 [...]

Day 6 of Jamie & Linda’s Adventure – Palamós!

Today are docked in Palamós, Spain and we decided to fill our day with a small getaway to three different villages. First we spent some time in Palamós . It is located at the northern end of a large bay, which is popular for swimming, sailing and windsurfing. The town is a major port with one of the last remaining fishing fleets on this part of the Mediterranean coast. The town's major economic activities until the second half of the 20th century were fishing and cork manufacturing. In the sixties, however the town saw a rapid growth of tourism. The soul of Palamós can be found most days at 4pm, when the fishing boats unload their catch and the local fish auction begins. This has been the tradition since the 16th century! Palamós is also famous for the locally caught prawns. Second stop – Pals. Perched on a hilltop is this charming medieval village. The views of the country side were spectacular (worth the 30 minute bus ride fro the pier!) Imagine a town where most of the buildings are built from stone, carved from the moat the encircles the town...this is Peratallada (carved rock is the literal translation). I felt like a character in a Medieval play where the Castle Stick buy cialis sell it buy viagra online down 4 buy cialis that buy cialis online want - buy viagra seem my buy cialis to? of Peratallada (build in 1065AD) surrounds everything! Thank goodness I got new walking shoes for this one...the rutted streets and small passageways were a Helfen allem.
